Quake impact on health still to come

Basing their predictions on what happened three years after Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans, Canterbury health officials say that the full impact of the quakes on the health of Canterbury people is yet to be felt. Source: Fairfax News

Giving voice to muted Christchurch

A blog and video platform started by a small group of documentary makers wants to hear your views on Christchurch.

As former mayor and St Albans resident, Garry Moore, who features on the Christchurch Voices website, argues the views of Christchurch people and the Christchurch City Council are being overlooked and over run e.g.: the council’s plan for the city built in consultation with its citizens, was overtaken by the male-dominated CERA-appointed 100 day plan group. Democracy and open-ness is being strangled.

Have a go at cricket

The Have -A-Go cricket programme is running again at the St Albans School over summer.

The sessions, run by the Riccarton Cricket Club for a cost of $40 per person, will be held on Fridays at 5.30pm and run for 14 weeks until early March 2013.

SARA supports campaign to fix EQC

Shoddy service, obstructive access to information and bumbling delivery are spurs to the creation of a citizens’ campaign to fix problems caused by EQC.

The Residents EQC Action Campaign (REAC) is a public campaign to sort out EQC, not only for people in Christchurch, but also for Wellington and other areas likely to experience strong earthquakes in future. The campaign has been endorsed by a number of residents associations and support groups, including the St Albans Residents Association.

Lemons wanted to make lemonade

Do you have a lemon tree in your back yard groaning under the weight of those yellow citrus fruits. Is there an empty section near you with a lonely lemon tree?

Well, St Albans School is on the lookout for lemons, lots of them, to make old-fashioned lemonade to sell at the monster school fair on November 10. The fair will be held in the school grounds from 4pm to 7pm.

Festival of Transitional Architecture to light up city

Festa, or the Festival of Transitional Architecture, will light up the inner city this weekend. The Luxcity event, during the evening of Saturday, October 20 can be accessed from Latimer Square.

Lighting up the inner city though is just one of a number of events that makes use of empty sites and highlights the work of Restart and Gapfiller.

Some houses need a lift above flood plains

New buildings and extensions to older buildings may need to be built on higher ground to avoid floods according to information revealed by CCC/CERA.

The message for St Albans is unclear. Parts of the map released by the council are not coloured at all (no extra height required) and others are coloured green or blue showing they are possibly likely to flood if a one in 50 or one in 200 year flood occurs. Then there is a large U shaped, piece of land coloured grey which the council has yet to categorise.

Community gardens bus trip

A community bus trip, which starts off from Packe Street Park and wends its way through community gardens on the east side of Christchurch, is one of the highlights of the inaugural Spring River Festival planned for the weekend of October 20 and 21.

The bus, which holds 50 people, departs from Packe Street Park (125 Packe Street) and visits gardens at Fitzgerald Avenue, Delta Trust, Smith Street, New Brighton, before finishing at Wainoni where Christine Dann will talk about vegetable gardening. Reservations are required for this tour and a small charge is made to cover provided refreshments including a mini breakfast and lunch. The bus returns to St Albans around 4.30pm.
