A Christchurch residents group hopes its popular community centre will be rebuilt.

Demolition work on the earthquake-damaged St Albans community centre is expected to begin this week.

The former St Albans Library had been managed by the St Albans Residents Association since 1998, but was closed after the September 4 quake, leaving about 30 community groups homeless.

Association chairwoman Emma Twaddell said the group had been planning an extension to the Christchurch City Council-owned building before the quakes.

However, it was not clear now whether redevelopment would go ahead, she said.

February’s quake meant more community space in St Albans had been lost, and the groups that used the centre had struggled to find new space.

However, the quakes had given the association the chance to create a new plan for St Albans, including the possibility of a purpose-built community centre, she said.

Deputy mayor Ngaire Button said the 1921 building was a local landmark but was not listed in the Christchurch city plan.

No decision had been made on the site’s future.
