Survey Information

WHY A SURVEY?

A survey sent to all houses in the area is the fairest way to judge what the residents want to see happen in their community.  It is costing SARA about $1,500… but we feel it is money well spent.

WHAT HAPPENS TO THE INFORMATION?

The top twenty suggestions from the survey will become the St Albans Community Strategy for the next ten years, so your say will really make a difference.  SARA will prioritise projects that are in the Strategy. Any data relating to the work of other organisations or businesses in the area will be shared with them and they will be encouraged to support the strategy also.

WHAT’S IN IT FOR THE RESIDENTS?

  • Everyone in the St Albans area will benefit from the ten-year strategic plan that SARA will produce out of the information gathered in the survey.
  • It only takes a few minutes to complete the survey.
  • Those who complete the survey have a choice to put their details on the form and go into the draw to win prizes donated by local businesses.

Where is St Albans

St Albans is a large inner city residential

area of Christchurch with a big population – approximately 25,000 people.   It is a very diverse area with people of many cultures, religions and lifestyles residing here.

The St Albans Residents Association (SARA) was formed as a protest group to the motorway proposal and designation in 1966. This designation was finally uplifted in 1994 but as a result of the 28 years of designation, little Council money had been put into roading or other developments in the area.

Consequently, the suburb of St Albans became depressed with lower property values and the chain reaction of a transient population. SARA after 1994 wanted to address this blight on the suburb and from a reactive issues group became a proactive group with the aim to foster a spirit of community in St Albans and play a part in the development of a vibrant and healthy community brought about by the involvement and empowerment of its residents.

It’s time to get a new list so we can continue to grow the Newlands area and make it an even better place to live.

WHO IS SARA?

SARA is a residents’ association.  We work to improve the facilities and environment of the St Albans area for the benefit of all who live here. St Albans encompasses the areas with the postcodes for St Albans, Mairehau, and Edgeware.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

Please allow us to put a poster up in your window or on a noticeboard.  We only need it to be there until the survey ends, which is Monday November 18th 2024.  If you have a newsletter going out then mention the survey in it, there’s a suggested paragraph below

WHAT TO TELL YOUR CLIENTS/STAKEHOLDERS

  1. Tell them that the survey is being run by the local residents’ association
  2. Tell them that it is important to fill it out
  3. Tell them that you support the idea!

WHAT’S IN IT FOR YOU?

  • Your clients/stakeholders will see you as participating in something that is important for the wider community.  It’s a bit like sponsoring something… but it costs you nothing!
  • Helping SARA undertake the survey means you are helping make our community a better place.
  • You build up goodwill with the local residents’ associations… and you never know when you might need us
  • You will receive an invitation to the gala launch of the Ten Year Newlands Community Strategy.

A SUGGESTION FOR YOUR NEWSLETTER

“The St Albans Residents Association (SARA) Inc  are surveying the community to build a wish-list for the next ten years.  SARA last did this in the year 2012, and as a result the area now has a buzzing community centre, an upgraded skate park, a new community garden and a Sustainable St Albans group, new recreational activities and a more inclusive community.

What would YOU like to see in your community?  We’ll pick the top twenty ideas and work at making them a reality.

And everyone who enters has the chance to go into the draw for prizes donated by local businesses. For further information, visit www.stalbans.gen.nz
