How do the new DBH technical categories for the Green Zone affect my EQC claim?

For homeowners whose property is in the green zone and in Technical Categories 1 or 2 (TC1 or TC2) with foundations that require repairing or rebuilding, a range of standard options are available for the repair and rebuilding of foundations. In general, your insurance will cover any additional costs of these foundations. Policies can differ however, so it’s best to check with your insurer.

In Technical Category 3 (TC3), site-specific geotechnical investigation and specific engineering foundation design will be required if your foundations are damaged and you need to repair or rebuild your home. Talk to your insurer in the first instance.

In short, here are a range of property scenarios:

Red Zone Green Zone – home needs total rebuild Green Zone – no damage to land or foundations
Your land will be unsuitable to live on for some time. Talk to CERA about the Government’s offer to purchase your property or your insurer about your options. You need to talk to your insurer about your claim. They are working with EQC on resolving any land damage claim. The rebuild/repair process will continue as usual for you. You will not be required to upgrade your foundations.
Green Zone – TC1 Green Zone – TC2 or 3 Green Zone – still awaiting EQC assessment
The process will most likely continue as usual for you, as your home can be rebuilt or repaired with standard residential foundation construction methods. If EQC is covering all the damage to your home, your repair will be managed for us by Fletcher EQR. If you are with Fletcher EQR, they will manage the repair of your home, and will be in touch about when this will occur. If you are not with Fletcher EQR, you should talk to your insurer. You will be assessed by Christmas 2011. Visit eqc.govt.nz to see when your suburb is being visited.
