SCIRT Update 3-2-2012
We understand that the city’s damaged roads and footpaths can be frustrating to travel along at the moment. People just want to be able to go about their day to day business without having to struggle with uneven surfaces.
Although permanent repairs to all the city’s roads will take some time, there are temporary repairs being carried out to make the roads safe for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians, while the Stronger Christchurch Infrastructure Rebuild Team (SCIRT) develops its full long term rebuild plans.
In general, SCIRT will permanently repair roads after all the work under it has been finished. That is, when the other infrastructure, such as fresh water, wastewater, and storm water has been rebuilt.
SCIRT is developing a programme of repair work where there is minor damage to pavements. This will include areas of high pedestrian use, where the underground infrastructure does not need to be repaired in the short term. This programme will include repairs to hundreds of footpaths, cycleways and roads around Christchurch’s schools, shopping centres and hospitals and other “high use” locations. Once the pavement repairs near these key facilities are completed, the focus will shift to residential areas.
Work has begun in earnest with pavement repairs outside a number of schools.
