Kia ora Healthy Christchurch The 23rd annual Festival of Flowers draws to a close this Sunday 4th March. It has been a real treat for the Garden City, with the Botanic Gardens hosting the Festival with its Floral Installations and Events. A very popular installation this year has been the Friends of the Botanic Gardens Commemorative Garden. Rocks, plants, a miniature corrugated iron cathedral and a golden angel were all part of this peaceful setting; so beautifully situated at the base of a cluster of mighty gum trees, near the Peace Bell.
On Wednesday 22nd February there was an intimate Memorial event at the Commemorative Garden in collaboration with the River of Flowers , led by Healthy Christchurch and Avon Otakaro Network. River of Flowers contributed to the Festival of Flowers site through petals being placed in the river and the largest ‘wishing tree’. The tree has become very popular for folk to come to; to write their wishes and hopes for the future and tie them onto a ribbon wound around the tree. These wishes will be handed over to the Ceismic Project, who will collate the messages and keep them as‘post-earthquake’ memoirs from the community and eventually they will be available online as part of our earthquake story.
On Sunday 4th 5pm, the Commemorative Garden will be dismantled. There are close on 1000 pots of plants and all of them will be for sale. The Christchurch Garden City Trust would like to offer the community a chance to buy these plants at cost price, and to take home a memory of the Commemorative Garden .
You can choose from large full pots of: Tuberous Begonia, Laurentia, Impatiens (single, double and butterfly), Matricaria and Bacopa. You can buy them for a bargain price of $3.50-$4.50 each!
All proceeds will support the Christchurch Garden City Trust, a Not-For-Profit Charitable Trust. Phone 974 3204 if you wish to pre-purchase plants, or just turn up on the day. Bring bags or boxes as there is no car access (if large quantities are purchased a trailer can be provided).
