Is local government being supported by a system that should be relegated to the past? Is there something better suited to our 21st century democracy and educated ratepayers?
A rateypayers’ group from the Waimakariri District has come up with an alternative. Find out more about it by visiting the ratesnomore website and click on the “submissions” button.
Group spokesman Rick Caddick said that the group was formed initially as objectors to decisions made by Waimakariri District Council, but research into the set-up and function of local councils has broadened their concerns. “No amount of adjustment to the existing system for the funding of local government could possibly produce a sound, satisfactory, just and equitable working model. It is based fundamentally on antiquated, out of date historic principles and ideas that can no longer provide an acceptable system befitting this modern age.”
Putting local issues to one side, the group has evolved a simpler, fairer, more just and affordable system. “Our objective now is to promote its acceptance by the public at large and to strive for its implementation by lobbying and pressing central government to change to this better system.”
The group’s submission to the select committee briefly outlines the alternative system, its benefits and advantages, compared to the shortcomings of the existing system.
