SARA supports campaign to fix EQC

Shoddy service, obstructive access to information and bumbling delivery are spurs to the creation of a citizens’ campaign to fix problems caused by EQC.

The Residents EQC Action Campaign (REAC) is a public campaign to sort out EQC, not only for people in Christchurch, but also for Wellington and other areas likely to experience strong earthquakes in future. The campaign has been endorsed by a number of residents associations and support groups, including the St Albans Residents Association.

Because EQC has repeatedly failed Christchurch residents the group has a number of public demands including:

  • Right to full disclosure from EQC of all the information they have about your home
  • Case Managers, so that residents don’t have to deal with a different person every time they make contact
  • Right to a government-funded appeal process, independent of EQC, through legal aid or community law centres
  • Free insurance advocates (similar to the successful health advocates system)

In a neat touch, REAC is an anagram of CERA.
