Needs of disabled in rebuild overlooked

SARA management committee member and community advocate, Hine Moke is speaking up about the needs of those living with a disability being overlooked in the rebuild.

Hine has been living in St Albans since she lost her Waltham home and is one of several people in this Press article drawing attention to accessibility to shops, transport and employment. Things have been tougher for those facing mobility challenges (wheelchairs etc) dictating which shops and buildings they can enter.

Developers need to take into account, when rebuilding, the needs of those using wheelchairs and other assistive devices, as well as those who have problems with vision, and to build in accessibility features into their plans from the beginning, rather than as an extra. There are anecdotal signs with some of the rebuilds that this is not the case.
