St Albans Youth seeking funding to develop their skills can apply to the Shirley Papanui Community Board’s Youth Development Fund.
In the past, secondary school students have applied for funding to participate in sports tournaments, study music or take part in outdoor pursuits challenges, leadership camps and missions. “The board sees this fund as a way to invest in young people, who show potential in their area, and provide financial support which often means they are able to attend a trip or tournament and receive its benefits which they would not have been able to afford otherwise,” says board member Anna Button.
Council staff assist with any queries relating to this funding source. All applications are processed by council staff and sent to the board for approval. The amount granted will probably not cover all the costs but is worth knowing about if a young person finds themselves accepted to compete in an event but without the means of getting there.
It is also worth approaching local service groups such as Lions or Rotary and check out the Breakout database at the library as it lists all sorts of funding opportunities.
