Have you thought about setting up a website based on your street or a group of neighbours?
A group calling itself Street Groups is promoting the idea in Christchurch neighbourhoods.
It takes a bit of organising, and you have to decide whether it will be a street or a block and include somewhere between 30 and 200 households.
The idea was tried out in Condell Street in Papanui a few years ago and needs re-establishing. It is something local residents need to initiate and continue to offer support.

Interest in web-based, hyperlocal organisation is nothing new but has grown since the earthquakes. St Albans NeighbourNet had a dial up intranet based on a computer at the St Albans Community Centre as early as 1997, inspired in turn by US based bulletin board systems in California and other places. Street Groups has an even narrower focus.
