A group of Christchurch engineers and planners have come up with an innovative plan for 21st century housing in Christchurch that could house up to 15,000 people in a walkable urban centre within five years.
The plan differs from those revealed so far and will be outlined at a public meeting hosted by ESR Christchurch branch at the University of Canterbury (Lecture Theatre E5 at 5.30pm) on March 22. Rather than looking at physical appearance the engineers have focussed on energy, water, food, resource, productivity and connectivity aspects.
The buildings have been designed to last up to 250 years, cater for all income levels and be accessible to everyone.
The group has not been commissioned to design these houses. They have volunteered their time because they are concerned about the unsustainable nature of commercial rebuilding and residential development that is going on and “threatening the longterm sustainability of the city.”
