Western Association Football Club celebrated 100 years of soccer over Queen’s Birthday weekend.
Events included a conversazione, golf game, scheduled Saturday matches by juniors, ladies and men’s teams as well as a couple of extra ones and a centenary dinner. Replica 1913 shirts were sold on Trade Me (one diagonal red stripe instead of multiple red and black vertical ones today).
In May, the Shirley Papanui Community Board gave the Association $2000 from its discretionary response fund towards the production of a centenary booklet.
A potted version of the club’s history is available on the website. The name itself shows a connection to the Western Christchurch High School that later morphed into Christchurch Polytech.
