Asbestos in houses

EQC will only remove asbestos from Christchurch homes where the claddings have actually been damaged by the quakes. Any other asbestos-removal is the responsibility of the homeowner.

Asbestos materials were used in houses in New Zealand from 1940s to 1990s and could be in textured ceilings, walls, roofs or under lino. The presence of asbestos will be determined during the scope of works and the homeowner will be notified and decisions made on who is responsible and what will be done.
