If you didn’t manage to pick up sandbags in the Shirley/ Hills Road car park on Saturday afternoon you could make your own to “welcome” Cyclone Lusi. This city council webpage gives advice on how to make sandbags from plastic bags or hessian bags.
While the council tries to work out whether to widen and deepen channels or use a pump to bypass flood-prone areas, sandbags are one way to at least try and prevent water from entering the house or garage. For further information on building a wall with sandbags check out this Australian site.
The council will not be collecting the 22,000 sandbags, distributed to help prevent flooding following an expected downpour as the remnants of Cyclone Lusi pass through the city on Sunday. Weather forecasters expected that the total rainfall would be much less than that which fell on March 6 but it would be intense over a three or four hour period.
