Helen Ross from Edgeware Village Green got a very nasty surprise when she passed nearby the village green on May 8 – the heart-shaped garden had been destroyed without warning.
“Wanton destruction without a moment’s hesitation,” she said, adding: “My heart is crushed.”
No one from the Green committee had been given any notice about the imminent removal of the garden.
This sounds vaguely familiar, maybe it’s becoming a Council habit. In 2006, the adjacent Edgeware Pool was destroyed suddenly, in the middle of a discussion on its future.
The destruction of the heart garden was carried out by Clemence Drilling, whose owner Dave Clemence is consultant and contractor to the Christchurch City Council, owner of the land. The Village Green has sent Clemence Drilling a “please explain” request.
The Edgeware Village Green was set up four years ago to receive council funding to develop a community garden on the water services site, which until a couple of months ago was accessible from Trafalgar Street.
Village Green members are aware that their garden could be a temporary initiative but that does not justify the lack of communication and its sudden destruction.
