SARA now manages community centre

The St Albans Residents Association took over the on-site management of the St Albans Transitional Community Centre in Colombo Street on October 6.

“At 4.40pm precisely, we crossed the threshold!” SARA committee member Doug Jack with some excitement.

The Residents’ Association lost access to the community centre in September 2010, following the first earthquake and when a replacement building was hauled on to the council-owned site, Christchurch City Council managed, and is still partly responsible for, the centre for just over two years.

The St Albans Community Resource Centre, as it was known initially, was opened on October 18 1998 with a community facilitator and base for NeighbourNet computers. Thousands of people made good use of the centre over a 12 year period.

For any enquiries relating to the centre please email community centre@stalbans.gen.nz. Several meeting rooms and a barbecue trailer, suitable for fundraising, can be hired through the centre. An online booking system is being worked on -further information will be posted shortly.
