In a bid to do something about the safety of St Albans School children crossing Cranford St at Westminster St the city council has come up with a plan that will:
- Reduce the number of car parks outside the new building in Cranford St, the one with the raised footpath, affecting local retailers
- Restrict ie: time limit parking for other areas
- Create an extra straight through lane (briefly) for cars travelling along Cranford St through the intersection.
This sounds more like a plan to improve traffic flow along a busy street than a focus on pedestrian safety.
Some children at St Albans School have come up with a good idea though, they think that there should be a Barns Dance at the intersection, forcing all car traffic to stop for brief periods so pedestrians can cross. This would mainly be needed before 9am and after 3pm for a short time.
The Christchurch City Council is chasing feedback on proposed changes to the Cranford St/ Westminster St intersection. To find out more information about the project and view a map of the area then give feedback online please visit: Cranford St/Westminster St changes
