Dora Roimata Langsbury, Central Ward candidate

doracopyDora Roimata Langsbury is an Independent candidate standing for a position as councillor (and also for the community board) for the Central Ward in the forthcoming elections.

Christchurch is my home. I am inspired by the leadership our commercial, social, environmental and sporting organisations take, to bring progressive change to our city. Christchurch has a strong history of community-led leadership including well known entities such as Kate Sheppard, Thomas Edmonds, Elise Locke, Rod Donald, Gil Simpson, Glenn Martin, Di Lucas and Kaila Colbin.

I have personally been involved in a range of community organisations. I have been Co-Chair of the post-quake NGO network, One Voice Te Reo Kotahi. I am an active member of the Peterborough Village and New Brighton Sustainable Coastal Village project, these are residential groups that actively promote the establishment of sustainable, mixed-use, future-focused communities. I am the past Chair of Rehua Marae in Springfield Road, which pioneered Maori trade training in New Zealand. I am currently on the Board of Te Puawaitanga, a provider that focuses on supporting mothers and babies. I am also a member of the Otautahi Maori Women’s Welfare League branch and of the Green Party.

I competed at a national level in sport, including winning the national title in the Ladies Surf Race. I have also won numerous South Island regional titles. I worked my way through university as a paid life guard at QEII pool and on Christchurch’s beaches during the summer. I am now a carnival official for Canterbury Surf Lifesaving.

One of my proudest moments was being asked by the Christchurch City Council if they could use one of my poems to decorate the inner city, when it was reopened to the public. My poem was printed onto a 60 metre banner that spanned half a city block, across from Ballantynes. It was titled, “In my father’s footsteps.”

I completed my tertiary studies in Christchurch, gaining a teaching diploma and a BA in Sociology from Canterbury University. I went on to teach primary school in Waipawa, Hawke Bay and at Titahi Bay Primary school in Porirua City. While living in Wellington I made my transition from education to business, becoming a product management and marketing specialist at Telecom New Zealand.

I later joined Unisys Corporation and led a successful marketing team that sold Call Minder to Telecom; the network based service that answers your phone. This application was based on the LINC software which was developed in Christchurch. After this success, I was asked by Unisys to open up the voice-based telecommunications market for them in Asia. I was based in Hong Kong and later Singapore.

Before returning to live in Christchurch I had a successful international business career. I managed annual sales targets of US$20million for Unisys in Asia. I was then transferred to Unisys Worldwide Headquarters (in Philadelphia USA), where I had international responsibilities for marketing their telecommunications products. Later I was promoted to the Unisys Customer Relationship Management project ,where I lead a team of analysts and developers to implement a worldwide sales and marketing application for use by all of their employees. SAP then head hunted me to lead their CRM product marketing for North and South America. I returned to New Zealand after 9-11.

I have been a business consultant for Ngai Tahu. I have operated my own small business, I have been a business mentor for CDC and a small business tutor at Te Wananga o Aotearoa (TWOA). I went on to provide support to students at TWOA with their business, arts, Te Reo, and social services studies. Pathways to work support was also part of my service offering to these students.

I now work at Te Tapuae o Rehua, coordinating professional development for Early Childhood Teachers.

This strong back ground in business, education, governance and sport enables me to be well informed across a wide range of issues. I have been utilising these skills in the many community and business groups I belong to. I am now ready to use these extensive skills and networks to become an engaged and effective City Councilor who can fairly balance commercial, social and environmental needs.

I have chosen to stand as an Independent candidate for the Central Ward because I wish to represent the citizens of Christchurch and be guided by their values and aspirations.
