Start taking some photos in the Botanic Gardens and next year enter your favourite pic into the Christchurch Botanic Gardens Photo Competition and you might win prizes, including photographic equipment.
The winning photos will be displayed in a public exhibition.
The competition is part of the sesquicentennial celebrations for the Botanic Gardens, which were founded 150 years ago. The event is being jointly run by The Christchurch City Council and Friends of the Christchurch Botanic Gardens.
The deadline for the competition is 15 May but you can upload pictures anytime after 4 February 2013 to the friendschchbotanicgardens.org.nz website.
Subject categories include:
- The ever-changing Gardens – reflecting the Gardens through the seasons
- The Gardens through your eyes – illustrating your personal experiences of the Gardens that make for enduring memories
- The nature of the Gardens – focusing on plants and animals
Each category will have an adult and youth section (for entrants under 15 years on 30 July 2012).
Below are some ideas for photos over the seasons:
- Winter sports shapely leafless trees, moody mist and fog and the intense light of early morning and late afternoon.
- Spring is a riot of colour with magnolias, cherries and daffodils in September through to bright azaleas and rhododendrons in November.
- Summer is a great time to capture people in the Gardens with big crowds at concerts or smaller intimate gatherings.
- Autumn in April brings new colours as the leaves have many hues and the light gains new character.
