Youth market starts this weekend

The opening of the Christchurch Youth Market at 11 am on Saturday, August 11 offers an opportunity to view the recently completed 298 Youth Health Clinic and see the Youth Hub off to a good start.

The Youth Market will be held on Barbadoes Street every Saturday and enables young people to sell their crafts and products, wet or fine, every Saturday afternoon. Vendor space on the stalls is free for young people under the age of 25 years but vendors under the age of 14 must be accompanied by a guardian.

There will be food stalls, live music as well as a raffle, lucky draw and wishing well to make the event a lively and family oriented event. Car parking may be available in the bowling club car park on Worcester Street.

Robbie Fruen will be on site at 298 Barbadoes Street (between Gloucester and Worcester) to kick off the Open Day and to show support for the principles of this clinic, created especially for Christchurch youth up to 25 years of age.

298 Youth Health is the reopening of Youth 198, the free, innercity health clinic that was forced to close in 2010. The Clinic, staffed by doctors, nurses, counsellors and youth mentors, seeks to address the physical, sexual and mental health needs of the city’s most vulnerable youth.

The clinic, which will become operational later in the month, is part of the new Youth Hub, based in 11 wooden homes in Barbadoes Street, where organizations working in the youth sector can collaborate and provide a one stop shop for the needs of Christchurch youth.
