Learn how to map community data at free workshop

Learn how to gather, store, share and use data to help the community at a Data Mapping Workshop on October 27 and then help SARA with a data mapping project.

Data sounds like a rather dry and boring subject, but it can be used to help with funding applications or proposals to city councils to back up your case for support or to change others’ opinions.

The all day event (9am to 3pm) will be run by students from Unitec in Auckland for CanCERN. A simple exercise involving mapping a nearby area will be carried out as an introduction to the subject and to produce some data. This will not involve door knocking (although much data gathering usually does). Later discussions will delve into ways to carry out research and how to make use of the data.

The workshop is aimed at community groups such as sports clubs, scout and guides groups etc, as well as Residents Groups and Not for Profits. Registration for the free event is required and you can do that here but at the time of writing venue details were not available. Pot luck lunch.

The Residents Association aka SARA is on the lookout for someone to attend this workshop and put the principles into practice collecting and analysing data about St Albans. If you are interested please contact Emma Twaddell via email SARA@stalbans.gen.nz .
