Remembering 22 February 2011

When someone you love becomes a memory,
that memory becomes your greatest treasure.
Anon quote on Skylight website (a source of useful coping resources)

Several events are planned around the city to remember the devastating earthquake in February 2011 at Latimer Square,  Hagley Park, Wainoni and the Pallet Pavillion (next to Town Hall).

The Civic Memorial Service in Latimer Square, organised by the Christchurch City Council begins at 12 noon and there is a minute’s silence at 12.51pm. BYO seating.

Festival of Flowers Commemorative Event will be held on the Archery Lawn in the Botanic Gardens from 12.30pm to 1.30pm. There will be an opportunity to drop flowers into the Avon as part of the River of Flowers and the Wishing Tree makes a return.

Commemorative events are also being held early afternoon in Wainoni and at the Pallet Pavillion.

The Healthy Christchurch website provides a good overview of commemorative events in the city and around the suburbs. Don’t forget to put flowers in the road cones,

A Run to Remember -On February 23, there is a 12km charity fun run/walk from Victoria Park on the Port Hills to Hansen Park in Opawa, by way of the Rapaki Track. The epicentre for the February 2011 quake was close to that track. A $15 entry fee will be given to the Canterbury Earthquake Children’s Trust, set up for those children who lost a parent in the earthquake.

There is no event planned in St Albans as far as we know.

The organisation Skylight has also published some materials that might be useful for this occasion. They also produce resources for supporting anyone dealing with issues such as anger and potential suicide so bookmark their website www.skylight.org.nz for another visit later.
