Parts of St Albans flooded

Francis Street, Warrington St and the Flockton Street area were among those worst hit in the ‘100 year storm’ that hit Christchurch and Canterbury on March 4 and 5. The Press ran this item on Francis Street.

An estimated 50 city houses had flood waters inside with residents putting items up high and then self-evacuating.

Several roads including Edgeware Road, Hills Road and Warrington Street have been partly closed due to flooding.

Meanwhile, the Heathcote River broke its banks and flooded homes in Woolston and CBD building site basements turned into (unswimmable) pools. Trees came down in the high winds and 4000+ were without power on the city outskirts and Banks Peninsula. Road closures, combined with city road works, also turned 10 minute journeys to and from work into 90 minute time wasters.

Let’s hope local authorities are busy gathering information on actual flooding so they can better protect the city from future 100 year floods.
