Three years since tragic quake

Next Saturday marks three years since the devastating quake that killed over 180 people, toppled many city buildings, rendered thousands of city homes uninhabitable because of liquefaction and streets became impassable.

The event will be marked in Christchurch with an official commemoration on the Archery Lawn in the Botanic Gardens from 12 noon onwards, culminating in a minute’s silence at 12.51pm. Following on from this flowers will be dropped into the Avon River, from the nearby pedestrian bridge.

The River of Flowers event will also be held at different points along the Avon and Heathcote Rivers and the Estuary. Flowers can be dropped in at any time but the focus of activity is between 12.30pm and 1.30pm.
