Report aids planning for community recovery after disasters

The Canterbury Medical Research Foundation has produced a research report into how communities adapt after a disaster. The report is written from the perspective of those communities and will assist other communities around the world with recovery planning.

Mothers’ Day Fun Run at Rugby Park

Location: Rugby Park, Malvern Street
Time: 12 May, starts at 10:00am
Description: Five kilometre fun run and walk, raising money for the Heart Foundation’s Go Red for Women Campaign. Crusaders present. Register online on the Jennian website. Costs $20 to enter, includes a donation to the Heart Foundation.

School furniture to give away

Wharenui School in Riccarton has approximately 30 – 40 student chairs and 12 desks, surplus to requirements, to give away to a community group. The desks are wooden with steel frames, and the chairs are plastic/vinyl with steel frames, and would need to be picked up from the Year 1-8 school at 32 Matipo Street.Please telephone Geoff on 341-3335, or email riccomwatch@netaccess.co.nz if you are interested in these items.

Free materials for groups and businesses

The Christchurch City Council’s is launching a free materials service with a website that will help organizations exchange reusable materials for free. The service aims to prevent good reusable items from being dumped. The Freematerials site is available to businesses, charities, community groups, education providers and local or national government agencies.

More housing design advice for Canterbury

The Government is funding a housing design advisory service in Canterbury to encourage rebuilders and renovators to design houses to deal with future disabilities. Senior Citizens Minister Jo Goodhew and Disability Issues Minister Tariana Turia announced the service recently.
