He has just returned from a visit to Japan looking at traditional Japanese architecture and earthquake resistant technology.

Garage sale to send residents to Special Olympics

Location: Corner Bristol Street and Berry Street
Time: June 29 from 9am
Description: A garage sale is being held to raise funds to send eight residents from Independence House in Bristol Street to the Special Olympics. The sale is being organised by the Connelly Trust, which runs the house for intellectually disabled adults. There will also be a car wash ($7 per car) and sausage sizzle ($1.50 per banger)

Rubbish collection days changing

The city council has announced that rubbish days will be changing for some parts of Christchurch, starting the week of July 15. St Albans has been split down the middle, with Cranford Street and Sherborne Street marking the dividing line. Those living between Cranford/ Sherborne and Hills Road will have their rubbish collected on Mondays (not Fridays). Those living between Cranford Street and Papanui Road will be collected on Friday (not Monday)

Young parents organise Big Read

Description: The ‘Big Read’ will take place over eight hours from sunrise to sunset. Various reading based activities are planned, inside and outside the classroom, involving the students, their children, and members of their whanau and the school community. The facebook page has been created so others can get involved and where you can say how books save lives and name your favourite childhood book. Surface flooding in St Albans June 17

Continuous rain since late Saturday is putting pressure on the storm water system in St Albans and other parts of Christchurch.

Surface flooding was reported to be particularly bad in Edgeware Road, between Madras and Barbadoes Street and in Warrington Street near the discount dairy.

Open day at Rehua Marae celebrates Matariki

Location: Rehua Marae, Springfield Road
Time: June 29 10am-4pm
Description: The open day includes a jewellery workshop (bookings only) Mahi Toi, Mirimiri, Kapa Haka, Raranga, storytelling and Christchurch City Library children’s activities. Presentations include Rongoa Maori and Mataraki. The day will finish with a hangi (pre sales only) and Karakia Whakamutunga. The open day at the marae is the culmination of a number of Rehua Marae events starting on June 25, celebrating Matariki.
