Rebuilders’ village set for Orion site

Designs have been drawn up and the Christchurch City Council has given approval for plans to turn a northern part of the former Orion site in St Albans into a village for 200 workers rebuilding the city.

The complex will be known as the Cressy Village. Cressy was the name of one of the first four (of 25) ships bringing people from England to settle in Christchurch between 1850 and 1853. Drawings of the proposed site can be found here: Temporary workers accommodation plan

Rewiring St Albans

Makes a change from tales of pumping stations and wastewater pipes being replaced but the underground electrical cabling down McFadden and Kelly’s Roads is just as important.

Part of the cabling has already been laid between 75 McFaddens Road and Nancy Avenue and the remaining piece between Nancy Ave/Ramger Street and Walter Park near Hills Road should be laid this week. Work filling in the trench and resurfacing the road should be completed by mid February. Containers mark the places where the new cabling is being joined to older or recently laid cabling.

Set Facebook to catch a thief

A new Facebook page has been set up to alert people in Christchurch to burglars and scams that may be operating in their neighbourhood.

The Canterbury Burglar Watch page looks like social media’s answer to Neighbourhood Watch (which still operates in many areas). The page has reported on stolen items as well as suspicious behaviour. It also plans to cover useful tools like webcams, which can send files showing unwanted activity over the internet to a prearranged address.

Edgeware Road edging out traffic

The section of Edgeware Road between Lindsay Street and Madras Streets will be out of action for a couple of months from Monday, January 28 to enable repair work to be done on the footpaths, kerbs and roadway.

While this happens Edgeware traffic from both directions will loop around to Winton Street and back.

And when that is complete, another section of Edgeware will be out of use.

Capturing Christchurch photo competition

Your photo could feature on the front cover of the Christchurch City Council’s long term plan if you win the photo competition they are running.

The Christchurch City Council is running a photo competition to find images of Christchurch for its long-term plan. It wants photos that show the way we want our city to develop and the future we see for ourselves.

There are two categories. Photos can be of people (families, cultural and social events) or places (buildings, suburbs and the city). You can enter up to five digital images, taken since 1 January 2012, in Christchurch or Banks Peninsula.

Entries close at 5pm on Friday, 1 February 2013.
