Rats are a growing problem in a city with unattended buildings and abandoned houses.

If rats are coming from, or breeding in, a specific source (e.g. a poultry house, shed / garage with rubbish, food premises) contact the Council Action Line (941 8666) and an Environmental Health Officer will investigate. Alternatively, ring the CERA number (0800 7464 2372).

Seeking Mary Thomas

We have had a message from someone called Mary K looking for Mary Thomas, whom she used to correspond with in the 1970s.

Mary Thomas was one of 12 children and may have lived in the St Albans area or another part of Christchurch. The two Marys were penpals between 1973 and 1976.

Please email webspace@stalbans.gen.nz in the first instance if you are Mary Thomas or know of her whereabouts.

The Canterbury Report, released on December 21, found that while attention has been given to business recovery, repair of infrastructure and the rebuild of the central city, there’s been less focus on social recovery.

Organisations like Christchurch City Mission are finding increased demand for their services.

Emma Twaddell from the St Albans Residents’ Association, Helen Ross from the Edgeware Village Group and St Albans resident Jenny Smith from inner city community group Te Whare Roimata received awards as did trustees on the 2011 Board of Te Rehua Marae. These individuals are ones we have been made aware of but there may be others who live in St Albans but made contributions elsewhere.
