Robin Hood in Abberley Park

Abberley Park will stand in for Sherwood Forest when Harlequin Players produce the Adventures of Robin Hood for a week in mid January.

The musical written by playwright Roger Hall, contains lots of dancing and sword fights.

BYO picnic. There is a small charge to see the performances. Weekdays at 6.30pm and two performances on Saturday and Sunday at 11 and 2pm. The first performance is at 11am on January 13.

This is the only St Albans event included in the City Council’s summertimes programme. Harlequin Players used to rehearse in the old St Albans Community Centre.

Edgeware Village plan previewed

We’ve had the master plan for the CBD and now it is the turn of the suburbs. The city council’s “>draft plan for the Edgeware Village, drawn up after many hours of consultation, is about to be launched. Probably sometime in the New Year once the full Council has resumed meeting after the holidays.

Get growing for edible garden awards

Shirley Papanui Community Board is piloting the edible garden awards so get growing over summer and your vegetable patch or fruit trees could earn you an award.

The competition, organised in conjunction with the Canterbury Horticultural Society, is aimed particularly at community groups and schools and is designed to encourage localized fruit growing.

You can have $50 but not $40

The Westpac ATM in Edgeware Village has lots of $50 notes to dispense and is a bit choosy about when it will cough up $20 notes. I tried to withdraw $40 on Thursday – two $20 notes – but the machine refused to cough up the green stuff and I had to give in and accept a $50 note.

CERA compiles booklet for TC3 homeowners

CERA has produced a booklet aimed at homeowners whose land has been zoned TC3 and is making it available online.

The TC3 Residential Rebuild booklet provides answers to commonly asked questions about the rebuild.

The information has been compiled from various sources including the Earthquake Commission (EQC), the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment’s Building and Housing Group (Building & Housing) and the Christchurch City Council.

CBD red zone virtual tours

You can now take a virtual tour of the inner city red zone from the comfort of your computer.

The images were taken in the first half of 2012 so some buildings have already been demolished. Murray Quartly, who runs Focus360 Virtual Website Tours, has gifted the images to the University’s quake archive under the Creative Commons scheme.

Volunteers are urgently needed to help repair the St Albans Primary School Pool over the Christmas break.

The school particularly wants to hear from electricians, plumbers, builders and bricklayers. Even if you don’t have a skilled trade the school is also looking for others to help out with a range of activities.

CanCERN plan to reuse red zone housing materials

Time: 12:00pm-1pm on February 5.
Location: Aoraki Room at Community and Public Health (310 Manchester Street)
Description: What a waste all the residential red zone demolition is. Communities and organisations could be making use of all those materials being trucked to the dump or sold offshore.

CanCERN, with the help of Arrow International and CERA, have worked out a way to save and obtain materials from residential red zone demolitions that are otherwise destined for the landfill and give them back to community groups and organizations who can make use of these items. The plan will be outlined in a lunchtime meeting in early February.

The Workers Educational Association programme always offers a great variety of adult education classes at low cost during mornings, afternoons, evenings and weekends.

Their programme for Term 1 is now available. Check out one off lectures and put them in your diary or choose from bellydancing, creative writing, philosophy and other longer courses and sign up with the WEA.

The WEA operates out of premises in Gloucester Street opposite the Art Gallery.
